Idalas Castro was recognized by the Salt River Schools Education Board in December. Here is what her advisor Mario West had to say about her:
It is with great pride that I recognize Idalas Castro as Student of the Month. Since I began working with her in 2018, Idalas has consistently demonstrated a positive, motivated, and goal-oriented attitude. Her communication has always been clear and consistent, and she is truly a joy to work with.
I selected Idalas for this recognition because she exemplifies what it means to be a dedicated and resilient higher education student. She is a living example of someone who set a goal and is relentlessly pursuing it. Watching her graduate with her Bachelor’s in Law in 2023 and now preparing to complete her Master of Legal Studies at the end of Fall 2025 has been nothing short of inspiring. Maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.733 while working full-time and raising a child is a remarkable achievement.
I had the honor of writing a law school recommendation letter for Idalas, which gave me the opportunity to reflect on the many qualities that make her stand out. Her long-standing aspiration to attend law school is driven by a deep commitment to justice and a desire to serve her tribal community as a prosecutor or judge. Her journey is rooted in perseverance and purpose.
Throughout her academic career, Idalas worked full-time as a dispatch supervisor, often taking on overtime shifts. That role taught her leadership, patience, and how to remain calm under pressure—skills that have served her well in both her academic and professional life. There were many long nights and challenging moments, but she never lost sight of her goal. As she often says, “I wanted to build a better future for myself and my son. He has been, and always will be, my biggest motivation.”
That motivation has brought her to where she is today: completing her graduate studies, beginning a new role as a Tribal Court Advocate, and preparing to enter law school. Balancing work, school, and parenthood has not been easy, but it has shaped her into a resilient and determined individual.
Reflecting on this recognition, Idalas shared: “Being recognized as Student of the Month truly means a lot. It represents not just my hard work, but also the love and support I’ve had from my family, friends, and community. I hope my story encourages others—especially parents and working students—to keep pushing forward, because no matter where you start, or how long the road feels, dedication and determination can lead you exactly where you’re meant to be."
