The Higher Education program would like to congratulate Sarabeth Kaye, the first student from the Salt River Department of Corrections (SRDOC) to obtain a certificate in Addictions Substance Use Disorders Level I from Rio Salado College’s Reentry Program.
Higher Education and SRDOC staff, as well as educators from outside institutions, celebrated Kaye's success alongside her fellow classmates on June 6.
Kaye is one of 17 SRDOC inmates enrolled in college-level courses to receive certifications and degrees in a variety of areas.
It took Kaye 14 months to earn this certificate, and she is already studying for her next certificate in Addictions Substance Use Disorders Level II. She says she will continue on to earn her associate’s degree in Applied Science.
Once released, Kaye (who stated she has “learned from her past”) hopes to use her education to help others as a substance abuse counselor.
